Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS)

AMPS is a condition where children and young adults experience intense pain due to an abnormal increase in pain signal processing by the nervous system. AMPs can be triggered by a past injury or illness, trauma, stress, or at times no apparent cause.

This often leads to a severe disruption in people's daily activities and hobbies, and at times even requires the use of assistive devices.

The goal of physical therapy is to retrain the body and nervous system to rewire the “amplified” pain signals, to restore function, and return to one’s normal activities. At PROMPT Physical Therapy, our AMPS program emphasizes patient education on safely returning to physical activity, desensitization training, and guided exercise all while teaching the proper tools on how to manage their symptoms on their own.

We have seen numerous children with AMPS with significant difficulties walking and doing normal daily activities upon starting physical therapy, and finish being able to run, jump, and return to their normal life.
